Pink Penang Breast Cancer Support Group
The Group was founded in 2009 and initiated by Cancer survivors of Breast Clinic, Department of Surgery, Penang Hospital.
Together with Ms (Dr) Teoh Mei Shi, Senior Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon and breast care nurses of Department of Surgery, Pink Penang BCSG was formed to reach out to patients who were diagnosed with breast cancer and had no immediate support to overcome their initial grief and shock.
Senior Counsellor and Cancer survivor, Madam Chee Goon Hoe mainly contributed her time and passion to help patients cope and provide emotional support. Madam Goon Hoe herself is a twice cancer survivor, (breast and NPC) stage 4 completed treatment and still strongly surviving after 23 years.
Pink Penang BCSG is open to all cancer survivors and care-givers regardless of gender, age and nationality. Patients who are treated elsewhere are also most welcome to join the activities and talks that are arranged regularly at LGLSC
Currently there are about 30 – 40 active members who regularly join the activities and share their experiences with each other.
Main Objective
- Provide support to patients during crisis period
- Share personal experiences on how to manage and cope
- Support Care-givers who help manage the cancer patients at home during treatment
- Support each other in overcoming complications like lymphedema and chemotherapy side-effects
- Update knowledge of current treatments and rehabilitation
Main Supporters and Volunteers
- Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre CEO, Dr Mary Quah who from the very beginning offered them a place to have their weekly activities and encouraged them to be strong and positive.
- LGLSC Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon, Dr Teoh Mei Shi who helps with the back end running of the group eg raise funds, provides ideas for activities and arrange talks and activities etc
- CanCare – a company that provides post cancer care treatment mainly post mastectomy prosthesis, bras, chemoports and wound care.
Programmes
- Every Wed morning ( 9am to 12 noon) – sharing session and support at Breast Clinic, Department of Surgery, Penang Hospital
- Every Wed afternoon (2.30pm to 5pm) – @ LGLSC Breast Care Centre
Activities
- Every 1st Wed : Potluck lunch & Birthday Celebration. Welcome new members
- Every 2nd Wed : Singing / Dancing / Craft Activities
- Every 3rd Wed : Talk by LGL Consultants / Counselors / Physiotherapist / Dieticians etc
- Every 4th Wed / Sat : Meet onco patients going through chemo
